For one-night only, icons of the Australian stage, Lynette Curran and Deborah Galanos will bring to life two very different women - nonagenarian botanist Marion Blackwell and world-renowned counter-terrorism expert and recently appointed Federal Minister for Early Childhood Education and Minister for Youth Anne Aly MP.
Chef Jeff Schroeter’s superb menu for the evening will be designed to enhance the 20-minute theatrical experience, performed as an intermission to an incredible four-course dinner served in the spectacular sandstone wine cellar (specifically designed by Wendy Beckett’s set designer, Halcyon Pratt) with matched wines (non-alcoholic available) selected by Beckett’s talented Sommelier.
For our October Clubhouse event, Beckett’s is serving up two hot slices from the brilliant new Australian play, “I’m With Her” by Walkley Award Winner, Victoria Midwinter Pitt (writer and director). Curated by Beckett’s founder and playwright-director, Wendy Beckett (newly returned to Australia from Greece following the tour with her new play Sappho) “I’m With Her” goes beyond standard #metoo fare to give a thrilling real life demonstration of the power of women to outlast, outwit and outmuscle the patriarchy.

A call to arms to smash the patriarchy ... Within minutes of the show starting I was welling up. Not from the hardships each woman has faced but the path that’s been paved, and the hope each story offers...A beautiful thing to witness

Co-founder of Half the Sky, former Perth Festival Director Wendy Martin said, "In the spirit of The Vagina Monologues, I'm With Her was created to be experienced at kitchen tables, in schools, in universities and on stages across the country. Half The Sky is thrilled to be presenting its first public outing in Perth, read by a group of remarkable Western Australian women."
For its Western Australian premiere, in this special event staged reading, the roles were read by the following women: Anne Aly MP - writer Sisonke Msimang; Julie Bates - legendary blues singer Lee Sappho; Marion Blackwell world leading epidemiologist Professor Fiona Stanley AC, Pam Burridge - former elite athlete and local government community planner Lucy Griffiths; Nikki Keating - actor and storyteller Grace Chow; Patricia Madigan - former Head of the national Workplace Gender Equality Agency and President of Chief Executive Women WA Libby Lyons; Marcia Langton - inaugural Director of the Centre for Aboriginal Studies at Curtin University Dr Marion Kickett; Julia Gillard - actor and broadcaster Andrea Gibbs.
FIVE STARS
Profound ... Revelatory. Victoria Midwinter Pitt’s stunning script paints life itself as a radical act of resistance.
